The History of Celtic Wedding Rings
A wedding ring is an exceptionally powerful piece of jewelry. It is a band that is supposed to communicate eternal love, devotion, and fidelity as it binds two people together for life. Once their wedding ring has been placed on their finger, many people will never take it off, so it’s vital to find a piece that is beautiful as well as significant. Due to their history and exquisite design, Celtic wedding rings are wonderful choices for couples who are looking for something unique and meaningful to bind their love.

Although there are a range of traditional designs that can be used for Celtic wedding rings, the two most popular are the Claddagh and Celtic Knot. The Claddagh design, which features two hands holding a crowned heart, is a familiar one, as it is a symbol of Irish culture around the world. The significance of the different parts of the design makes it able to have many meanings, as the two hands represent friendship, while the heart represents love, and the crown represents loyalty. The way a Claddagh ring is worn is also of significance, as the ring being worn on the right hand pointing outward means the person is single, whereas if the ring is worn on the left hand pointing inward the wearer is happily married.

The history of the design is mixed with legend, and there are several stories that claim to explain its creation. One of these stories suggests that Richard Joyce, a goldsmith from the town of Claddagh, was captured by pirates in the 17th century and crafted the design as a symbol of his love for the woman he left behind. When he was finally released from bondage, he returned home and gave his beloved the ring the day they were married. Another legend states that a Claddagh ring was dropped into the lap of Margaret Joyce, a philanthropist in sixteenth century Claddagh, by an eagle as a reward for her good work. Yet another legend links the ring to a prince’s attempt to woo a poor girl.

While the exact history of the Claddagh ring is unknown, the elements that make up the design are part of a long tradition of Roman wedding rings. These rings, referred to as “fede rings,” use the hands clasping the heart to symbolize fidelity and betrothal. Regardless of their origins, there is no doubt that Claddagh wedding rings represent a powerful way to signify your eternal commitment to your spouse.

Another beautiful version of Celtic wedding rings is the Celtic Knot. Eight distinct patterns of the Celtic Knot have been identified, all of which are versions of basic interlocking elliptical shapes. The first Celtic Knots are found in manuscripts and floor tiling dating back to the fifth century. While archaeologists and historians have not been able to understand the definite meaning of the Celtic Knot, there is no doubt that the interlocking lines are meant to symbolize the eternal cycle of life and death. This pattern began to appear on betrothal rings in the 17th century and today is commonly considered a unique way to symbolize the eternal nature of your love for your spouse.

The various styles of Celtic wedding rings are as rich in history, legend, and symbolism as the history of their country of origin. Whether you select the strong Claddagh design or one of the eight intricate and delicate Celtic Knot patterns, there is no way you can go wrong when choosing one of these wedding rings.
